Alternative Therapies

philmarquart

Here at the Marra Knee, Hip and Shoulder Center, we study and stay abreast of the latest alternative treatments and offer many at our office. We are the only orthopedic office in the valley that offers many of these treatments.

PRP:

PRP is a therapy produced from the patient's own blood that is made up of plasma and a high concentration of platelets. It is injected into the injured area, thereby introducing a high concentration of platelets (as well as growth factors and cytokines) to the injury site, helping it to heal. We often inject PRP into soft tissue injuries and well as arthritic joints. Studies have shown significant relief of arthritic knee pain with PRP injection either alone or combined with viscosupplementation injection. We also use PRP in the shoulder and other joints. It has been shown to give remarkable relief to those suffering with tennis elbow.

We perform this procedure entirely in the office on a regular basis. The way the procedure works is to draw a small blood sample, spin that down and remove a specific layer of cells for final injection. The process takes about 20 minutes and involves very little pain.

Viscosupplementation:

At our office we give many viscosupplementation, “Gel”, injections . This medication has been shown to provide cushioning and lubrication to the joint and to significantly reduce pain and improve function. Studies have shown that when combined with PRP, effectiveness of the gel injection is boosted and results can last longer.

The MACI Procedure:

Individuals suffering from articular cartilage lesions within the knee may qualify for a Matrix-Induced Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation, a “MACI” procedure. To perform a MACI procedure, we harvest cartilage cells from the knee of the patient. We then send the harvested cartilage cells to a lab where the cells are grown into additional cartilage. Once regenerated, we implant the new cartilage into the damaged area of the knee. The body then fills the defect within the knee with new cartilage. This procedure has been shown to be quite effective in patients with isolated cartilage defects in knees with only mild or moderate arthritis. Unfortunately it has not been shown to be effective in knees with significant arthritis.

Other Procedures:

We offer several other cutting edge regenerative medicine options for specific orthopedic issues which have been shown to improve joint health and function. These treatments offer the possibility of reducing the chance of needing a surgical procedure such as a joint replacement. Ask us about the very latest technologies to improve your function and quality of life without the need for surgery.

Insurance Coverage:

Regrettably, often these innovative therapies are not covered by your medical insurance and have to be paid out of pocket. We are happy to arrange an easy payment plan that fits your budget.
